Introducing our storm timber benches, made with care right here in Jersey by local artisans and designers. The benches are constructed with timber sourced from Holm Oaks that were lost during Storm Ciaran in 2023. The design honours the beauty of Jersey's natural resources and a sustainable approach to production, making the most of our precious resources. We salvaged 70 tonnes of timber from the La Collette green waste site following the storm and invested in a mobile wood mill to make the most of our local timber. Our curved benches sit snugly in the alcoves of the French Lane entrance to the market, responding to the need for more al fresco seating. The design of the bench is inspired by existing features in the market. The traditional bevelled windows are echoed in the legs of the bench and the slats pay tribute to the dental cornice seen throughout the market; all painted 'Monarch' red to match.

Holm Oak
(Quirus Ilex)

Timber slats made from local storm felled Holm Oak:

Similar to common oak, this Evergreen Oak timber is hard and sturdy and well suited to outdoor uses.

Native of the Mediterranean though, a good coastal tree resilient to salty winds and sandy soils, whilst providing food for small mammals.

HOLM OAK IN JERSEY:

  • The Neolithic Longhouse Project at La Hougue Bie uses Holm Oak.

  • Jersey houses named Les Chenes or The Oaks usually refer to Holm Oak growing near by, rather than common oaks.

  • Attenborough claimed that Jersey could be the northern end of the Holm Oaks native range.
